Sewing Class – Thursday evenings

The new sewing course starts on Thursday February 5!
For details of subsequent courses please email Angela on portico.sewingcircle@gmail.com

IMG_2372 Classes are held Thursday’s 7.00-9.30pm.

Classes are popular so book early to avoid disappointment.

The class is very relaxed and sociable, you work on your own project suitable for your level and learn the foundation of sewing, and pattern alterations. Students have made bags, cushions, window blinds, tops, skirts and dresses and more.  We have lots of equipment and spare fabrics and threads, which can be used for embroidery and appliqué, but you should bring all the materials for your own project. We have a machine that can be used by all the students and I encourage people to bring their own machine so they become familiar with it, this can be stored at the gallery during the term.

All the classes are very friendly and we always have cake, biscuits and fruit with lots of tea to keep us going through the evening, if you should need any further information don’t hesitate to contact me.

Art Installation

From December 5th The Portico Gallery will be exhibiting a string installation in the main hall by Louisa Loizeau.

A word from the artist:

“My pieces are influenced by the surrounding architecture; therefore I have generally tried to findas varied and unusual locations as possible. I am interested in the effect that light and location have on the material and the effect that the material has on light and location. I employ string as a medium because of its delicacy. It allows me to make work that takes of an ephemeral and transient quality that reflects the space in which it is situated. The work can appear solid but in fact it is the transparency that allows me to make pieces on a grand scale without them ever dominating or imposing. ”

The gallery will be open to the public for viewing of this new art installation from Tuesday to Thursday 10am-5pm from December the 5th and late viewing on Thursday until 9pm.
