Wake up to West Norwood

Our Happening has happened!

Update 5th August:

Well we had a fantastic day here on Sunday. Thank you all so much for making it such a great day.

We will leave this page up  for a few more days as a big thank you to all the people who made it happen. West Norwood is a fantastic village in london and it’s the people that make it what it is.

Update 30th July:

We’ve sent emails out yesterday to many more people who should get involve. Our art, ceramics and yoga teachers will all be here throughout the day to sign you up and get your creative juices flowing. Also we’ve been thinking for some time about ‘film’ here and are keen to hear you ideas about films you’d like to see here in West Norwood.

Our Artist in residence will open up the strange room in the corner, an on going evolving performance piece that attempts to recreate the offices of a shadowy fictional organisation known as the C.R.O.S. this will be from 2pm. Our artist in residence has had films shown in london  this year and is working on a feature film.

ALSO the Portico singers will be performing live throughout the day  and we might even get some other live music. And yet more, been to our Music Hall evening yet? no? oh well come along on sunday and watch some great footage of previous performances…. showing throughout the day.

But wait… what actually is it? Well, friends, it is a gathering of people in a place that is quite close to the geographical centre of West Norwood. This fact, no doubt, could be argued over, but  no good would come of that… Indeed arguing is never an ideal solution.

The happening (it started life as a symposium but evolved) will bring together a diverse cross section of our fair North Wood in the hills. Beer? …well yes, as we now have a licence you may be able to buy a beer, but that really isn’t the point.

The point is this. We will attempt to bring people together to meet the other people involved in all the different things that ‘Happen’ in West Norwood. Our lovely new leisure centre has opened up today – a cause for great celebration indeed!

So people, artists, film buffs, musicians, cake making bakers and Open Works members: let’s get together and … HAPPEN!

Wake up to West Norwood!

Come along on Sunday August 3rd (FEAST day)

to find out more about your local charities, community groups and artists.
There will be visual presentations in the gallery, stalls of local makers and suppliers, talks and Q&A sessions from various individuals and representatives of groups including:

Cultural Groups.

Faith Groups.

Youth Groups.

Health and Leisure.

Media.

Forums.

Heritage.

and so many utter fantastical wonders you really really should not miss it!

We will be launching our Festival which is taking part here to coincide with the Lambeth Heritage festival and will begin on Friday 5 September with the film Paths of Glory.

The talks will be held every half hour between 11am and 3pm and will last no more than five minutes each.

The gallery now has a licensed bar selling locally brewed beer and snacks, wine and soft drinks.

This will be a great opportunity to learn more about your local area, promote your business or organisation, and discover a new passion!

And below, for your viewing pleasure, is a small slide show of pictures taken in the building over the last few months, can you see yourself in any of them?

Creative Movement Workshops

On 11th July 7:30-9:30pm we hosted some Creative Movement Workshops. Here are some details from Victoria Thompson, the class tutor.

Everybody is invited

These monthly guided movement workshops are friendly and relaxed and open to anyone with an inclination to explore and deepen awareness of their creative moving body.

Relaxing and Being

Beginning with relaxation, we calm the nervous system and take time to turn our attention inwards, tuning into the tiny movements and shifting sensations within the body. Giving ourselves permission to be in our body, just exactly as it is, opens up our potential for moving and being.

Finding Movements that Feel Good From here, I lead you towards rediscovering for yourself, ways of moving that feel juicy and nourishing, inviting the blood to flow, the breath to move and awakening the senses.

 Enhancing Sensation

I offer to guide people to be able to offer and receive gentle touch to enhance sensation and relaxation in places of tension such as the back, shoulders and neck. We move towards feeling more relaxed, released, open and flowing in our movements.

Space to Move

The Portico Gallery Studio is clean, spacious, gently lit and welcoming with mats and rugs for relaxing. (wear loose warm clothing).

Forward this invitation to friends, visit ‘Moving and Being’ on Twitter and Facebook (click the link below) or email vixmoves@icloud.com.

Looking forward to moving with you in June and July.

The Painting of the Sea Side Novelty

So, people of the internet, you have reached Portico. And here you see the creation of ‘The Sea Side Novelty’ ….What, I hear you ask, is ‘The Sea Side Novelty’? Well, if you have passed through the doors of Portico in the last couple of weeks, you may have seen it – standing in the corridor awaiting your heads. Yes, friends, that is correct, your heads. However before we carved those holes out the three edwardian holiday makers did indeed have faces! …And here, for the first time we reveal to you, the internet perusing public, their rather happy little faces.

Of course this is all beside the point. What, you ask, is the point? …Well the point is this: SEA SIDE MUSIC HALL IS ON ITS WAY. Yes lucky lucky people of London, once again the Portico Picture Palace Hosts an evening of music hall entertainment, this time with a salty theme and candy floss in its hair. On the last weekend in May we will whisk you away to the sunny sea side for a spectacular evening of music hall tunes…. did you know this old place, the building itself, used to be a Music Hall? So this is not some museum piece kept behind glass. No this is real West End stars doing real music hall songs in a real music hall. Right here in the Great North Wood*.

Do come, get tickets via phone, email or just turn up and we will sell you one.

For more info see the music hall page.

*Not the new (and truly fantastic) Pub, just the old name for West Norwood….

SUPPER No.1

So on the 8th of May 2014  The open works team held there first Suppper No.1. We assume it was called that as there are many more to come, indeed we do think it went very very well indeed. There was some lovely food, lovely people and lovely flowers. Tessy and Laura gave a great talk about the aims of the project and it was good to meet up with some members who have signed up. It seems there is a grown swell of people in and around West Norwood who want to make a difference to the way the systems operate, will he Open Works be responsible for instigating a change? We hope so!

The Portico Gallery is very involved with this project and we are housing a co-working space up in the mezzanine which has tea tables and wi-fi access.

So we do hope that this project continues to grow and thrive and change the systems that it aims to, and we here at Portico will help in any way we can.
