Mambista – Fri 26th February

We’re back on Fri 26th February!!!

Our Mambista nights are a totally fabulous way to groove the night away – and we always have loads planned for the fourth Friday of the month in the warm embrace of the Portico Gallery.

The evening kicks off again with a Salsa dance class at 7pm to loosen up those limbs and get boogie-ing!

At 8pm Gerry Lyseight picks up the mood with DJ duties on either side of live music.  This month we’re loving the return of Jazz Carib – with their rootical mix of jazz, reggae and ska.

We were always going to get Jazz Carib back after their wonderful September session but as their drummer extraordinaire, Kenrick Rowe, is going off on tour with PJ Harvey soon we’ve brought them forward to February 26th. Alongside Kenrick we’ll have Bammi Rose, Alan Weekes, Lance Rose and Eddie “Tan Tan” Thornton whose combined credits include playing for Jazz Jamaica, Jazz Warriors, Ska Cubano, Aswad, The Beatles, The Mighty Diamonds, Janet Kay and Georgie Fame. To be hosting a band with their pedigree and sheer musicality is a privilege.  Not to be missed.

19.00- midnight.  Salsa class 19.00-20.00hrs.  Mambista from 20.00 til midnight.

Click on the PayPal “Add to Cart” button above to pay just £6, in advance or £8 on the door (both prices include the salsa dance class).

Mambista – November 2015

Our Mambista nights are a totally fabulous way to groove the night away – and we always have loads planned for the fourth Friday of the month in the warm embrace of the Portico Gallery.

We’re back on Fri 27th November and the evening kicks off again with Newton’s Salsa dance class at 7pm to loosen up those limbs and get boogie-ing!

At 8pm Gerry Lyseight picks up the mood with DJ duties on either side of live music.  In November we have Krar Collective from Ethiopia who perform a rootsy and contemporary take on traditional music from Ethiopia based on other-worldly modes and driven by hypnotic rhythms. The traditional acoustic krar lyre is associated with the azmari minstrel tradition; electrified, in the hands of Zeleke it becomes a gritty, ancient rock guitar – accompanied just by traditional kebero drums and fronted by stunning vocals.

“This London-based Ethiopian three-piece, centred on the traditional krar harp, were one of the grooviest and most hypnotic bands at Damon Albarn’s recent Africa Express bonanza.  Expect an ultra-repetitive funky dance marathon.” Time Out

19.00- midnight.  Salsa class 19.00-20.00hrs.  Mambista from 20.00 til midnight.

Starring the legendary American painter, graffiti artist, poet and musician Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960-1988), Downtown 81 is both a post-modernist fairytale and a vivid depiction of the downtown New York art and music scene in the early 1980s. The film chronicles a day in the life of a 19 year-old starving artist (Basquiat) who must raise money to reclaim the apartment from which he has been evicted. Hoping to sell a painting to earn the rent, he wanders the downtown streets, painting in hand, encountering painters, models, junkies, graffiti artists, rappers and rockers whose lives and performances provide a slice of life from one of the most exciting periods in American culture.

A virtual “lost” film, shot in 1981 but not completed and released until two decades later, Downtown 81 not only captures one of the twentieth century’s most interesting and lively artists in Basquiat, but also features music from many of leading musical artists of the era including Kid Creole and the Coconuts, Tuxedomoon, The Plastics, James White and the Blacks, The Lounge Lizards, and DNA.

Dj’s Ken Jones & Pete W top and tail the feature with downtown selections.

This is the digitally remastered release in all its widescreen glory.

8.00pm Dj Ken Jones (Effra Sound)
9.00pm Film screening
10.15pm DJ Pete W (Soul Night)
