Sewing Classes

The Sewing Circle

The Sewing Circle is a very relaxed and sociable affair, open to complete beginners and those more experienced with the needle! Participants are free to work on their own project, or be guided through a project appropriate to level and ability. Focus will be on developing foundational skills of sewing and pattern alteration, with plenty of inspirational stimulus thrown in! Students have made all sorts of items, from bags, skirts and dresses to window blinds, curtains and cushion covers.  Coffee and cake, tea and biscuits, fruit and great conversation, all are in abundance throughout the evening, so come on down and join the circle!

A sewing machine, equipment and a whole array of embroidery and appliqué are available at the gallery, and students are also encouraged to bring their own machine and become familiar with it.  The machine can be stored at the gallery for convenience.

The Sewing Circle is held every Thursday, from 7:00pm to 9:00pm, at The Portico Gallery.

The Sewing Circle is run by Angela, a graduate from Central St. Martins, with a passion for fashion, spanning the last twenty years. Currently working at the London University of Arts, Angela loves to impart her knowledge, craft, and general love of all things textile-related! Wishing to de-mystify sewing and bring fashion crafts to the hands of those who feel inspired to create unique and individualised, hand-made items, Angela extends a warm invite to the circle!

Portico Bloom

A weekly after-school workshop for all budding young artists, welcoming all children, aged 6-12.  Run by artist and qualified teacher, Jessie, this workshop invites children to create and express themselves artistically, showcasing their creations at West Norwood’s local community market, FEAST. A fun and exciting opportunity for all involved.

Bloom takes place every Wednesday, 3:45pm – 5:15pm, at The Portico Gallery.

Jessie has been working with children in the creative sphere for many years and is highly motivated to inspire and motivate young people to explore their talents.  As well as being a teacher and artist, Jessie also designs holiday camps for children to express themselves, develop their social skills and explore their connection with the world around them.

Pottery Workshops. Winter/Spring 2019 courses

A six-week, course, welcoming all potters, from complete beginners to artists experienced with clay.  Those new to the medium will receive a secure grounding in the basic skills and methods involved in making and decorating clay; and those with existing knowledge and experience will receive the stimulus and any assistance they need to develop their skills and refine their competency.  Different clays, along with a variety of techniques will be explored, as well as introduction to and use of the kiln.

The Portico gallery has two Raku kilns, a large standard kiln and plenty of, indoor and outdoor, studio space and storage. Course costs include standard clays, glazing and firing, use of all equipment and tools, and also storage of work – which must be dried thoroughly before biscuit firing and then glazed and either Raku or standard fired!

Kiln’it takes place one evening a week, from 6:30pm to 9:00pm and costs £140.

Kiln’it is run by Emma Fenelon, a local artist from the Camberwell area.  Since qualifying, Emma has been collecting awards and commissions, and has developed a name for herself as the most innovative ceramicists around! Emma is keen to share her talent and experience with those who harbour an interest in pottery and clay work, and the Portico Gallery are delighted to host the frequently run six-week workshop.

Yoga, Fitness & Wellbeing at Portico


The Portico Gallery hosts a series of sessions, including yoga, qi-gong, animalistic training, BJJ MMA.  Classes run across a flexible schedule, from Monday to Saturday, and are offered by a diverse team of motivated and inspirational individuals.  All relevant information is detailed on the website; take a look, find a session, and jump straight in!  Classes are designed to be accessible for the wider community and all all priced at £5 unless stated otherwise.


A mixed-level yogasana class, open to all abilities.  Classes vary in focus, working on developing strength, balance and flexibility; whilst allowing scope for self-practice and refining particular asana and inversions.  Classes are physically challenging, but also allow for cultivation of yogic mind and spirit, nurturing a sense of peace and promoting a culture of acceptance and equanimity.

Internationally renowned yoga teacher, Felix Price, has over twelve years of teaching experience in yoga and mixed spiritual arts.  Felix leads fun, flowing sessions, open to all levels. Certified yoga teacher and massage therapist, Amy, has been involved in bodywork for almost a decade.  Amy loves to integrate elements of Thai massage with healing touch and her yoga classes involve lots of creative sequences, playfulness and hands-on adjustment. Classes involve lots of sweat-inducing strengthening, but also aim to be refreshing and help clear the mind, inspiring one to live each moment mindfully!

Yogini Claire, has been practicing yoga for close to fifteen years, trying out many styles before establishing Astanga spoke to her on a deeper level, and undertaking her 200-hour YTT in this style. Damian has been practicing yoga since 2014, experimenting with various styles from Hatha to Astanga Vinyasa, and completed his 200 hour YTT in India, the spiritual homeland. Through exploring pranayama and breath-work, alongside practicing asana, Damian began to experience the myriad of health benefits associated with the practice and is passionate about sharing this with fellow yogis and yoginis. Pete was deeply inspired to teach yoga after seeing his life change through his daily practice. A gentle, meditative session, with a focus on visualisation, breath-work and movement. Jamie founded Qi Tribe with the intention of promoting health, happiness and abundance in the community. Jamie studied under the lineage of Zhineng Qigong, created by Dr. Pang Ming, a Doctor of Chinese medicine, in 1979. Zhineng Qigong was developed as a powerful method for individual healing and Jamie is eager and enthusiastic to share this will all involved.

Animalistic Training

A very fun, challenging and unique class, designed to improve your health, fitness and energy levels in a way which also cultivates a connection with nature and the body.  The class is high-intensity, utilising the body’s physicality in order to optimise fitness and build mental strength. A diverse, range of dynamic exercises and floor-based drills, designed to stimulate the central nervous system, flushing the body of toxins and help clear energetic blockages; ‘Animalistic training’ encourages you to dig deep, train hard and sweat by the bucket load!

An intense work-out, focused heavily on technique and skill, the boxing sessions aim at getting all participants fighting fit! Classes involve lots of cardio, pad-work and a theme of real-life application lies at the core of the training. Teacher Profile

Josh has been practicing martial arts since his teens, and and has always been motivated by the discipline and physical demands of the sport.  He has been teaching and facilitating boxing training sessions for four years now and is interested in using the sport to nurture a community-minded connection.  Josh spent some time in the refugee camps in Calais and founded Calais Jungle Boxing Club, giving him first hand experience of how the sport can help people transcend negative mind-sets, and cultivate a sense of being grounded.


Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) is a martial art, combat sport, and a self defence system that focuses on grappling and especially ground fighting. Sessions are taught by exceptional black-belt, many times champion and experienced teacher, Leo Nagoe.  Leo practices and teaches BJJ for self-defence and his style is based around the application of pressure, not giving the opponent space to recover.  He is the master of escapes and defence, and his guard passing is designed for reality.  Leo has the skill and experience to hold a safe, unintimidating space to share his craft and at the same time help others build fitness and spirit.

Teacher Profile

Growing up in Rio de Janeiro, Leo received his BJJ black belt 19 years ago, after initially starting practicing the sport in 1990.  He is many times Brazil’s state and national champion.  Regarded as an exceptional grappler, Leo has trained extensively with many of the greats of BJJ and his Jiu-Jitsu is on another level!

Classes are popular so book early to avoid disappointment.

The class is very relaxed and sociable, you work on your own project suitable for your level and learn the foundation of sewing, and pattern alterations. Students have made bags, cushions, window blinds, tops, skirts and dresses and more.  We have lots of equipment and spare fabrics and threads, which can be used for embroidery and appliqué, but you should bring all the materials for your own project. We have a machine that can be used by all the students and I encourage people to bring their own machine so they become familiar with it, this can be stored at the gallery during the term.

All the classes are very friendly and we always have cake, biscuits and fruit with lots of tea to keep us going through the evening, if you should need any further information don’t hesitate to contact me.

Life Drawing – 6.30 to 9.30 closed until further notice


An informal, friendly and supportive group, welcoming beginners, novices and advanced artists alike.  Sessions involve differing projects, in which the group has fun working collaboratively, sharing contributions on poses, lighting, materials, and general creative expression.

Instruction is offered for those who would like it, and constructive group discussion about work occurs throughout the evening. Typically, poses are structured to provide opportunity to develop different artistic approaches as well as skills, including both short and long poses.  A range of diverse life-models, are sought for the sessions, in order to provide a wide range of body types.

Easels, drawing boards and clips are provided; paper (A1/A2), pencils, erasers, and charcoal can also be purchased at low prices.  Participants are also encouraged to bring their own materials, which promotes maximum enjoyment of the sessions and cultivates one’s personal artistic path.

Mambista October

The next Mambista on October 23rd marks our first birthday!!!
In the last year we’ve hosted some amazing bands; I’ve played lashings of luscious tunes; we’ve reconnected with old friends and made lots of new ones – so for our big day we have booked a big band. Here To Havana is an Afro Cuban orquesta and they will be aiming to rock you like your back ain’t got no bone, with their crackling Rhythm and Sharp Style, playing contemporary renditions of Latin and Afro Cuban classics – Son, mambo, rumba, cha-cha-cha and boogaloo –  from the likes of Eddie Palmieri, Tito Puente, Chucho Valdez, Cachao and Cal Tjader. Expect Mambista Partay Plus.
We loosen up with Newton’s salsa dance class at 7 (beginners welcome).

Whether you’ve already been Mambista’d, or plan to give it a go when the stars are perfectly aligned, we hope you had the most festive of festive seasons.

The first two Mambista sessions have been big fun, and much more is planned for the fourth Friday of the month in the warm embrace of the Portico Gallery.

We’re back on Friday 23 January with your post-Xmas, pre-Brazil Carnaval, Samba and Pagode Party featuring Grupo So Kem Eh, live on stage.

And, we’ll be going on midnight, which will be our new finishing time for 2015. Three thousand six hundred seconds extra Mambista for a piffling quid pro quo of one extra of your English pounds!

Tea Dance

Wednesday 14th January was the first Tea Dance of 2015. The Portico Singers were there to entertain as well as soloists, the singer was Kirsty Bennet (actress, singer, director and Teacher!), a pianist (Andrew Chadney, a professional Musical Director) and a saxophone player (Nick Onley). Great entertainment, great dancing and great company.
The next Tea Dance will be a Valentines special on the 11th Feb at 1430 – 1630
